This film was made in 1944 and tells the story of an American family living in St. Louis at the time of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition World's Fair in 1904.
It stars Judy Garland, Margaret O'Brien, Mary Astor, Lucille Bremer, Tom Drake, Leon Ames, Marjorie Main, June Lockhart, and Joan Carroll, and was released by MGM.
"Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane, 1944, performed by Judy Garland, became a big hit after the film was released. The film was directed by Vincente Minnelli, who met his future wife, Judy Garland, on the set.
Hugh Martin, the composer and lyricist who wrote "The Trolley Song" and "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" which were both sung by Judy Garland, died on March 11, 2011. He was 96 years old.
One of my favorites, here is the scene in which she sings one of the most beautiful Christmas songs ever.

A Christmas Carol
This was the very first Christmas Carol movie I watched as a child. It was made in 1938. I remember being so afraid of the ghost of Christmas yet to come! One of my favorites!

The Little Matchgirl
On a cold New Year’s Eve, a poor girl tries to sell matches in the street. She is freezing badly, but she is afraid to go home because her father will beat her for not selling any matches. She takes shelter in a nook and lights the matches to warm herself. In their glow, she sees several lovely visions including a Christmas tree and a holiday feast. The girl looks skyward, sees a shooting star, and remembers her deceased grandmother saying that such a falling star means someone died and is going into Heaven. As she lights her next match, she sees a vision of her grandmother, the only person to have treated her with love and kindness. She strikes one match after another to keep the vision of her grandmother nearby for as long as she can. The child dies and her grandmother carries her soul to Heaven. The next morning, passers-by find the dead child in the nook, with rosy red cheeks and a smile on her face. They express sadness at her death and the burnt-out matches she must have used to warm herself, but they cannot know the wonderful visions she saw in her final moments or how gloriously she is celebrating the New Year with her grandmother.
Another favorite of mine, but so sad.

Scrooge
There are many versions of A Christmas Carol/Scrooge and this is yet another from Walt Disney shown in 3-D...my favorite way to see a movie. It's to be released in November 2009 and I think I shall have to go and see it. Update....I did make it to the movie theater to see this with my son, hubby, and grandchildren, and thought it was an excellent version of Scrooge! I loved the 3-D effect also! I finally did purchase the DVD and added it to my other Scrooge collections.
Other versions, and I'm sure there are many more, include:
1. 1938 version with Reginald Owen "A Christmas Carol".
2. 1951 version with Alistair Sim "A Christmas Carol", my favorite.
3. 1970 version with Albert Finney, a British musical, "Scrooge".
4. 1979 version with Henry Winkler, "An American Christmas Carol," a little different from the others, but I still enjoyed it.
5. 1984 TV. version with George C. Scott "A Christmas Carol".
6. 1999 version with Patrick Stewart from (Star Trek: The Next Generation), "A Christmas Carol".
There were even a few cartoon versions:
7. 1962 "Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol" w/Jim Backus which I loved to watch when I was young.
8. 1992 "The Muppet Christmas Carol" w/Michael Caine as Scrooge.

The Nightmare Before Christmas
This movie is a Halloween/Christmas movie. I watch it every year. Gotta love Jack Skellington, who is a being from "Halloween Town," as he discovers a portal to "Christmas Town." Danny Elfman wrote the film score and and provided the singing voice of Jack as well as other minor characters. This was a 1993 film directed by Henry Selick and produced/co-written by Tim Burton.

Christmas Vacation
When this movie first came out, we went to the theater to see it. What a riot! I laughed so hard and still do everytime I watch it, which has been quite a few times! It's one of my favorites!
This film is a 1989 Christmas comedy starring Chevy Chase who just wants to have a "good old fashioned family Christmas." It turns out to be anything but that!! What a holiday classic!
